Fermentative Production of Ketone Body (β-hydroxy butyrate, BHB)
Overview
Osaka Gas is working on developing fermentative production of Ketone body (β-hydroxy butyrate, BHB), which is attracting attention as a novel source of energy and an alternative to carbohydrates.
Background
A low carbohydrate diet is talked about as a new diet method. During that diet, the body shifts its main energy metabolism from sugar to ketone bodies. In recent years, the ketone body has become known as a superb energy source that has various physiological functions.
Ketone bodies are only found in small amounts in milk, liver, and other foods, and no foods that contain them in abundance have been discovered. In collaboration with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, we have had success in developing a technology for mass-producing ketone bodies by fermentation, using a microorganism called Halomonas.
Action
Efforts to actively take ketone bodies as supplements and food ingredients have begun around the world. Osaka Gas has developed a technology that enables the use of natural ingredients to produce ketone bodies by means of fermentation. It is also independently developing it as a raw material for cosmetics. The company is improving its production system to meet the demand for ketone bodies, which is expected to grow in the future.
We provide samples of newly developed naturally derived ketone bodies to corporations.
